April is Earth Month, a time to increase your knowledge of environmental issues and encourage action to protect the earth. Below are things you can do to join the awareness:
Pledge to Rideshare. Ridesharing means ditching your car and using any mode of alternative transportation. By reducing your drive-alone commute, you’ll not only lower your carbon footprint but also increase your chance to win exciting prizes throughout April. UCR faculty, staff, and grad students who pledge to rideshare and track their commute days with IE Commuter will be entered into their prize drawing for a chance to win one of several great prizes including an Apple iPad mini, a Nintendo Switch Lite, gift cards, and more!
Take the bus to the Farmers Market. UCR students are encouraged to meet up on Saturday, April 12th for a group trip to the farmers market in downtown Riverside. Meet at the RTA Route 1 bus stop in front of Bannockburn Village at 11am. The group will meet back up at the Lemon Street/University Avenue bus stop at 12:30pm to return to campus. You can also stay on your own and catch a later bus back.
Try Transit. Shifting from cars to public transportation can reduce up to 2.2 tons of carbon emissions annually per individual. For local trips, students, faculty and staff can use their free RTA bus pass to travel. Just swipe your ID card on board or use RTA’s Go Mobile app for unlimited travel throughout the county. For travel outside of Riverside County, try taking the train. Metrolink offers students a free Student Adventure Pass available through the end of June. Faculty and staff members that live in the Inland Empire can experience Metrolink with free tickets offered through the IE Commuter program.
Attend UCR’s Sustainability Showcase and Flea Market. Stop by the Rivera Lawn on April 23, 2025, between 11am-1pm for the Sustainability Showcase & Flea Market. Explore sustainable products from local vendors, visit with our transportation partners that offer eco-friendly alternatives to driving, and join in on some climate action fun and engaging opportunities.
