Every day, bikes and scooters are having to share the road and pathways with other cars and pedestrians. It’s a fact that UCR has seen a huge increase in the number of electric scooters on campus. It’s important to remember that e-scooters are powerful transportation vehicles that deserve respect when being driven. Here are a few tips to stay safe and avoid accidents:
- Never ride tandem on scooters. Not only is it unsafe, it’s against the law.
- Bikes and scooters are considered vehicles and must follow all motor vehicle traffic laws.
- Avoid drivers’ blind spots and don’t weave between lanes.
- Dismount and walk your bike or scooter in heavy foot-traffic areas.
- Don’t ride on sidewalks and always ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Wear protective gear and make sure your helmet fits properly.
- Be aware of your surroundings and use hand-signals.
Riding bikes and scooters is fun, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. It’s important to be safe not only for yourself, but for everyone around you.
