Making travel plans for the holidays?
Whether you’re without a car or just don’t like the thought driving in traffic, there are plenty of alternative transportation options for you to choose from as the holidays approach. Click the links below for more details on each service.
If you are flying out of Ontario Airport the quickest method of transportation from campus is to use an app based rideshare service such as from one of their recommended providers.
If you are flying out of LAX, the most economical way from campus would be to take the Metrolink train to LA Union Station and hop onboard the FlyAway Bus which drops passengers off in front of each terminal. You can purchase your FlyAway ticket along with your Metrolink ticket via the Metrolink app or the vending machines located at the train station.
Metrolink is also a great option if travelling within Southern California as it serves six counties (Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside, San Bernardino, North San Diego and Ventura). Metrolink offers $10 weekend day passes that are valid for travel all day system-wide on either Saturday or Sunday as well as provides a 25% student discount on weekday travel.
Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) is the perfect choice for local travel. Students and staff need to register for a free RTA pass through UCR Transportation Services and you can ride for free, any day of the week, on any RTA fixed route bus. There are several routes with direct links from campus. As an example, from campus you can take Route 1 to the Mission Inn Annual Festival of Lights celebration which runs November 6, 2021 through January 6, 2022. Or, take Route 1 and transfer to Route 200 in downtown Riverside which takes you directly to the front gate of Disneyland.
If you do need a car, you can rent one right on campus by the hour or day through ZipCar. There is a $15 annual membership fee to join, but once enrolled you can reserve a vehicle online and choose from a number of cars located right on campus. Rates start as low as $8.50/hour and the price includes gas, mileage and insurance.
Regardless of where you go, there’s plenty of options to get there. If you need assistance, contact Transportation Services with alternative transportation questions at (951) 827-8277 or email alttransportation@ucr.edu.
