Since 1994, UCR has offered a bus service to transport faculty, staff and students around campus and the community. Transportation and Parking started out with one 28 passenger bus that made a continuous loop around the campus. My how we've grown since 1994. The campus now owns six busses that travels a good distance from the campus to bring faculty, staff and students to UCR. UCR recently purchased two very large coach busses to transport athletes to games and to make available for the campus to lease for activities.
The increase in busses has also affected Fleet. In the past, all bus services and maintenance were sent off campus. It was not cost effective to start a bus maintenance facility with so few busses. That has changed. After months of analysis, we determined we can keep the UCR bus fleet running at less expense than if it went downtown for service.
We began the process of identifying the needs of the campus and TAPS. We determined in order to do the maintenance on the campus bus fleet, we needed to have a facility to work on them and an experienced technician that was familiar with the laws pertaining to transporting passengers. We looked for months and interviewed many applicants. While they were good, we wanted the best. We found this in Santiago Barrera. Santiago comes to UCR with more than 23 years experience as a bus technician with MTA. He's been with Fleet since November 2001 and has already made a very impressive mark on our department. We know with Santiago's presence, the bus fleet will always be ready for the campus to use. Welcome, Santiago.
